Florp

About

Florp is an easter egg item inspired by the hampter meme found in level 5-2 of the video game Ultrakill. Florp was added to the game in an August 2022 update and became the subject of memes, fan art and other fan content in the following months on sites including Reddit, Tumblr and Twitter.

Origin

Florp would not appear in Ultrakill until an update to the game in August 2022. However, he was referenced several times throughout 2021 in reference to the game. For example, on January 3rd, 2021, Twitter^[1] user @TheSaladmancer posted a piece of fan art featuring Florp on a robot's shirt, writing, "#ULTRAKILL i live for florp," garnering over 60 likes in three years (shown below, left). On January 26th, the official Ultrakill Twitter^[2] page @BaekMaddison posted artwork referencing Florp, garnering over 760 likes in two years (shown below, right).

On August 16th, 2022, Ultrakill update 11 was released, adding layers five and six to the game.^[3] In stage 5-2, players can find Florp, an easter egg item depicted as a hamster that seemingly takes inspiration from the "hampter" meme, inside of a smokestack (shown below).

Players are meant to take Florp back to the start of the level, climb the starting pillar and sacrifice Florp in front of a caged man, Jakito, to allow him to escape. Once Florp is sacrificed, the man escapes the cage, ascends into the air and the game crashes. While this is the only level featuring the item, Florp is foreshadowed throughout various levels on layer four, including on a wall carving in 4-4. On August 22nd, YouTuber^[4] CalciumLad posted a video delving deeper into the foreshadowing and lore surrounding Florp, garnering over 100,000 views in eight months (shown below). In the video, the YouTuber hypothesizes that Florp is an angel or a heavenly weapon based on contextual clues.

Florp became an increasingly popular subject of memes and fan art after the update. On January 11th, 2023, Twitter^[5] user @ferrymech posted a piece of fan art that gained over 3,600 likes in three months (shown below).

On March 22nd, Redditor oofinator3050 posted a video titled "giving florp bath" to /r/Ultrakill,^[6] garnering over 1,100 upvotes in two weeks. On March 25th, Redditor UncommonTheIdk posted a meme to /r/Ultrakill^[7] showing Florp smoking a blunt, garnering over 1,600 upvotes in the same rough span of time (shown below).
