About
Forgiveness Stops refers to a descriptive noise image macro of Jesus Christ captioned with the phrase "forgiveness stops." An offspring of the Jazz Music Stops meme, the image macro received initial spread in April 2018, regaining popularity in February 2021, primarily on Reddit.
Origin
The image macro is based on the painting "Jesus the Christ" by Del Parson (shown below, left).[1] The exact source of origin of the image macro is unknown. On April 20th, 2018, an anonymous Imgur[2] user made the earliest found repost of the macro alongside the caption "forgiveness stops" with a closeup of Jesus' face (shown below, right).
Spread
In the following months, the image saw active use online as a reaction. For example, on April 25th, 2018, an anonymous 4chan[3] user used the image in an /o/ thread. On July 14th, 2018, Twitter[4] user @HunterSCollins used the image to respond to a tweet.
On April 14th, 2019, an unknown Redditor[5][6] posted the earliest found derivative meme based on the macro to the /r/dankchrisitanmemes subreddit (original post no longer available; shown below).
In 2019 and 2020, the image macro saw moderate use in memes online, primarily on Reddit. For example, on March 16th, 2020, Redditor[7] kajri posted a meme that received nearly 600 upvotes in six months (shown below, left). On July 30th, 2020, Redditor[8] comradestarving posted a meme that gained over 560 upvotes prior to being removed (shown below, right).
In late February 2021, an altered version of the image macro in which Jesus was given bulging eyes gained popularity online (author unknown). For example, on February 24th, 2021, Redditor Lekmanutpls posted a version of the meme that received over 3,400 upvotes in the /r/memes[9] subreddit (shown below).
