“Gary, You Are Gonna Finish Your Dessert, And You Are Gonna Like It,” is a memorable quote uttered by animated character SpongeBob from the Nickelodeon TV show SpongeBob Squarepants. In memes, the image of SpongeBob yelling and pointing, sometimes referred to as SpongeBob Rage, is used as an exploitable image macro series to express rage, but can also be used as an object labeling macro or photoshopped into other images. In September 2020, a remixed version of the clip became a trending song known as “M to the Gary” on TikTok.

Origin

The original clip that the meme is pulled from is seen during season two, episode 24 called “Dying for Pie,” which was released on January 27th, 2001. During the scene (featured below), Squidward is arguing with SpongeBob over the fact that he spent the entire day with him attempting to be nice because he expected him to explode. Upon hearing this, SpongeBob mistakes his intent and says, “Okay, I’ll try,” before expressing intense rage as he says the line, “Gary, you are gonna finish your dessert, and you are gonna like it!”

The first time the scene is used in a meme is unknown, but the earliest example appears online in a YouTube^[1] video from Bassgenral uploaded on May 13th, 2007. Around the 1:49 mark, the image of SpongeBob yelling and pointing is seen with the caption “shut up noob, wahaha.” The clip (shown below), accumulated over 824,000 views, 2,300 likes and 380 comments in roughly 13 years.

Spread

On January 22nd, 2011, another version of the meme was posted to FunnyJunk^[2] by user planopanther resembling the style of Demotivational Posters (seen below, left). On November 11th, 2019, Redditor^[3] Ph4ntom- posted a variant to the /r/BikiniBottomTwitter subreddit as a reaction image (seen below, right), receiving over 1,900 upvotes and 23 comments in 10 months.

“M to the Gary” Remix Song

In late August and September 2020, a remixed song using the quote from the episode, “M to the Gary,” became a trending audio clip on TikTok^[4] with over 117,600 videos in one month. The original video was posted on August 23rd, by TikToker^[5] Napkin (shown below, left), receiving over 102,200 likes, 1,100 shares and 860 comments in one month. On September 10th, TikToker^[6] Pierson Wodzynski posted another example (shown below, center), receiving over 1.2 million likes, 14,400 comments and 7,600 shares in two weeks. On September 25th, TikToker^[7] Bella Poarch posted a variant (shown below, right), receiving over 4 million likes, 114,000 comments and 23,000 shares in 24 hours.
