Get Tortured or X, also known as Spider-Man Being Shocked, is a video caption and phrasal template meme format most commonly using a cutscene from the 2020 video game Spider-Man: Miles Morales in which Spider-Man gets tortured by security guards via electrocution. The format achieved virality on TikTok in June 2023 as meme creators made scenarios in which people chose torture over the proposed question.

Origin

On November 12th, 2020, the action-adventure video game Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was released for PlayStation 4 and 5.^[1] In one cutscene of the game, the main protagonist Miles Morales is tied to a chair and tortured by Roxxon security guards, who beat him up with energy batons (scene shown below).

On May 28th, 2023, TikToker^[2] @regular_dude40 posted a video caption meme based on the scene, captioning it "Get tortured or watch your bro die in front of you." The video (shown below) used a slowed + reverb version of "Honest" by Baby Keem and received over 1.6 million views and 227,000 likes in two weeks.

In the following days, the video caption format achieved viral popularity on TikTok as users shared memes captioned with versions of the snowclone. For example, on May 31st, 2023, TikToker^[3] @justified_jai posted a meme that received over 3.1 million views and 505,000 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). On June 7th, TikToker^[4] @_.ssosa._ posted a version that accrued over 762,000 views and 145,900 likes in one week (shown below, right).

The meme format maintained virality on TikTok throughout the first half of June 2023 with versions also appearing on iFunny and other platforms.
