Good Soldiers Follow Orders is a memorable quote from the animated television series Star Wars The Clone Wars depicting the Clone Trooper Tup. Online, the quote is often used in memes as a reaction image or image macro associated with the user's desire to complete a task out of a sense of duty.

Origin

The season six premiere episode of The Clone Wars, titled "The Unknown," aired in North America on March 7th, 2014.^[1] In the episode, the quote “good soldiers follow orders” was said by Clone Trooper Tup as a result of an inhibitor chip inside his head causing him to carry out Order 66 prematurely. Under the influence of the inhibitor chip, Tup shot and killed Jedi Master Tiplar (shown below).

The earliest use of the quote in a meme format was on December 6th, 2019, where Reddit user lorenzog_33^[2] submitted an image post to /r/PrequelMemes of Tup with the quote as a caption and titled their post about feeling obligated to dislike the 2019 YouTube Rewind despite thinking it wasn't all that bad (shown below). The post received over 1,100 upvotes in six months.

On February 2nd, 2020, Redditor TortueTeur submitted another example to /r/PrequelMemes^[3] featuring the quote by incorporating Order 66 with a Burger King order number (shown below, left). The post received over 84,000 upvotes (96 percent upvoted) in six months. On March 5th, 2020, Redditor Beautiful-DyzKH0rd^[4] submitted to /r/dankmemes feeling compelled to upvote a post that has 68 likes to 69 (shown below, center). The post received over 10,600 upvotes (91 percent upvoted). On September 14th, 2020, a deleted user from /r/memes^[5] submitted a post of a person challenging a woman to a 1v1 game of Call of Duty in exchange for sex (shown below, right). The post received 97,600 likes in six months (88 percent upvoted).
