About
Guess Who Is X Again is a phrasal template and a series of memes based on an image macro of a goth girl captioned, "guess who is very upset from something very small again!" Originally posted in 2019, the image gained virality as a source material for recaptions in 2022. The caption usually implies that the person posting the meme is the one described in it.
Origin
On December 8th, 2006, several clip art GIF animations of a goth girl were added to the GIF archive Animoteca,[1] including a GIF of a goth woman wearing all black with a cross necklace dancing (shown below). In the following years, the GIF was posted to other stock image websites, including FreeGIFimg.[2]
Prior to October 21st, 2019, an unknown user created an image macro based on the picture. The macro combined the caption "guess who is very upset from something very small again," implying that the person described is the poster, with a still frame from the GIF (shown below). On October 21st, 2019, iFunny[3] user Bobbys_Content made the earliest found reupload of the image. On November 1st that year, Tumblr[4] user sierraseybold posted the macro, with the post gaining over 12,000 likes and reblogs in three years.
Spread
In the following year, the image was reposted on Twitter,[5] Instagram[6] and other social networks as it continued to spread online.
On April 24th, 2021, Instagram[7] user iampeggingcatboys posted the earliest found recaptioned version of the image that gained over 19,000 likes in one year (shown below, left). On August 5th, 2021, Twitter[8] user @vmpugly posted a Portuguese translation of the meme that gained over 25,100 retweets and 96,100 likes in one year (authorship unconfirmed; shown below, right), later being reposted on iFunny,[9] Twitter[10] and other websites in the following months.
On September 4th, 2021, Pinterest[11] user spyn posted another recaptioned version (shown below, center). On September 7th, 2021, Twitter[12] user reposted another recaption that gained 12 retweets and over 80 likes in 11 months (author unknown, shown below, right).
The format gained an increased presence online in July 2022 as several recaption memes posted by Twitter users went viral. For example, on July 25th, Twitter[13] user @dumbricardo posted a version that gained over 33,000 retweets and 195,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). On July 26th, Twitter[14] user @tristehomo posted a meme that accumulated over 4,700 retweets and 47,100 likes in two days (shown below, left).
