Happy Lil' Sushi Roll or How to Care for a Sad Person is a webcomic strip by Freshmen describing a method of caring for a sad person by wrapping them up in a blanket and giving them affections, making them a "happy lil' sushi roll." The comic was originally posted to Facebook in March 2016 and gained viral spread over the following years, inspiring redraws and memes photoshopping it in various comedic ways.
Origin
On March 10th, 2016, iFunny[1] user Ocean_Gem shared a list made on the note app titled, "How to care for a sad person" that lists 10 steps on caring for a sad person, including rolling a person in a blanket like a sushi roll (shown below). The post gained over 221,000 smiles and 2,300 comments in six years. The list gained viral spread, including a repost to Imgur[2] two days later, garnering over 11,000 upvotes in the same span of time.
On March 14th, Facebook[3] webcomic page Freshmen then posted a comic by artist Yasmin F. visualizing this list in the form of 11 separate images where a boy rolls a girl up like a sushi roll to make her happy. The post gained over 64,000 reactions and 236,000 shares in six years (shown below).
Spread
The comic gained viral spread over the following months. On April 1st, 2016, Bored Panda[4] shared the comic in an article that gained over 616,000 visits in six years. On September 17th, 2017, a Redditor posted an edited lewd version of the comic to /r/ComedyCemetery[5] by an unknown artist where the boy has sex with the woman as she's rolled in the blanket. This became one of the more prominent versions of the meme in reposts. On October 10th, YouTuber Skyrah Bai posted a voice dub of the comic, garnering over a million views in five years (shown below). On July 18th, 2018, the lewd edit was reposted to /r/NSFWFunny,[6] garnering over 6,700 upvotes in four years.
On April 16th, 2019, a Redditor posted a redraw of the comic to /r/wholesomeanimemes[7] using characters from Persona 5, garnering over 3,800 upvotes in three years (shown below, left).On September 21st, a Redditor posted another redraw of the comic to /r/wholesomeanimemes,[8] garnering over 10,600 upvotes in three years (shown below, right).
On April 11th, 2020, a Redditor reposted the original comic to /r/wholesomememes,[9] garnering over 12,000 upvotes in two years. On September 17th, 2021, a Redditor shared the lewd version to /r/HolUp,[10] garnering over 17,800 upvotes in a year.
