Esnupi refers to the Spanish nickname for Snoopy the dog from the Peanuts. Esnupi memes surfaced en masse in 2024, mostly due to the gimmick account @esnupicore on Twitter / X, which inserted Esnupi into exploitable meme templates and went viral multiple times.

Origin

Spanish speakers began calling Snoopy "Esnupi" sometime in the 1970s. The earliest known usage of "Esnupi" was in the 1972-1976 edition of the Spanish humor collection Hermano Lobo by Mairena Solidaria.^[1]

In the 1997 book Juventud y Alegria by Celeste Perrino Walker and Eric D. Stoffle,^[2] they write about a dog named Esnupi "because he had black and white spots and liked to lie on the roof of his house."

One of the earliest pieces of internet content using "Esnupi" was a Snoopy drawing shared by DeviantArt^[3] user TTeBiZaRRo on September 12th, 2008, receiving over 5,800 views in 16 years (shown below).

On June 13th, 2019, X^[4] user @anavvictoria_ tweeted about her dog named Esnupi, receiving over 1,300 likes in five years.

The first discovered viral Esnupi meme (most emblematic of the later 2024 meme trend) was posted by X^[5] user @gir1genius on August 4th, 2023, gaining over 27,000 likes in 10 months (shown below).

X user @gir1genius cemented the term "Esnupi" across multiple viral tweets^[6][7] going into late 2023. Others began making their own Esnupi memes thereafter, like X^[8] user @nicgogh on November 26th, 2023, who posted photos of her Snoopy plushie, writing, "esnupi went camping to death valley this weekend 🚗🌄⛺️," gaining over 2,800 likes in seven months (shown below, left).

On March 24th, 2024, X^[9] user @snoopyzito tweeted, "calling snoopy esnupi because I know him like that," receiving over 28,000 likes in three months (shown below, right).

On May 29th, X^[10] user @tortadefrango67 tweeted a Kratos Mispronouncing In Spanish meme featuring Esnupi, earning over 104,000 likes in one week (shown below).

On May 31st, 2024, X^[11] user @esnupicore tweeted a "pros and cons of dating me" meme showing Esnupi as the template's "pros" and the "cons" a long list of illegible scribbles, gaining over 43,000 likes in five days (shown below).

Going into June 2024, X user @esnupicore went viral multiple times for Esnupi tweets.^[12]
