Hello Kitty Doesn't Like Xanax or Knives refers to a viral Tumblr post reacting to edgy artworks of Hello Kitty in which the user insists that Hello Kitty is not into taking drugs and self harm but instead enjoys wholesome things. Posted in 2018, in the following years the post achieved recognition online as it was presented in various meme formats, eventually inspiring recaptions and parody posts.
Origin
On October 24th, 2018, Tumblr[1] user nurse-peach made a post reacting to edgy content depicting character Hello Kitty engaging in taking drugs and self-harm. In the post, nurse-peach insisted that Hello Kitty enjoys wholesome things such as apple pie, baking cookies and spending time with her friends. The post (shown below) garnered over 102,000 likes and reblogs in six years.
Spread
On January 20th, 2020, X / Twitter user @catgirll reposted the Tumblr post in a now-deleted tweet which went viral and was spread via screenshots posted on other platforms (shown below). On May 6th, 2022, X[2] account @reactjpg archived the post.
On April 18th, 2022, X[3] user @pussykillstreak posted the earliest discovered meme based on the post, a Speech Bubbling Chadrick Basedman meme that gained over 8,500 reposts and 68,000 likes in two years (shown below).
On July 27th, 2023, Redditor Skeezor1 posted the earliest found recaption meme based on the format. The post (shown below, left), a Genshin Impact meme, gained over 460 upvotes in the /r/childemains[4] subreddit in seven months.
The copypasta regained popularity in February 2024 as it was used as a meme format, with users inserting other characters into it. For example, on February 19th, 2024, X[5] user @porgiesbigday made a post about Snoopy that garnered over 17,000 reposts and 169,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).

Hello Kitty Girl is internet slang for a particular type of e-girl with an affinity for Hello Kitty merchandise and aesthetics. In memes, a "Hello Kitty Girl" is depicted as attractive but emotionally unstable and potentially violent (similar to a "Yandere"). In January 2023, the character and archetype became the subject of memes, primarily on TikTok, in which men suffered injuries as a result of attempting to date a Hello Kitty Girl or trying to stop their friends from dating them.
