About

Helvetica Standard Edits refers to a clip from the anime Nichijou that is used in remixes prior to an unfortunate event or a similar sort of "EPIC FAIL" video.

Origin

On April 3rd 2011, first episode of Nichijou, titled "日常の第一話" (romaji: Nichijou no Dai-ichi-wa, English: "Nichijou Episode 1") was released. The series features comedic shorts outside the main plot, which are titled "Helvetica Standard." In the shorts, comedically unfortunate events occur (example shown below)[1].

On May, 14th 2020, Facebook[2] user Unkl Mitball uploaded a video in which someone crashes into a restaurant on a motorcycle, with the "Helvetica Standard" jingle added to the beginning. The post received more than 940 reactions and 1,100 shares (shown below).

Spread

The video inspired other Facebook users, particularly Indonesian users, to post videos with a similar format. For example, on May 14th, 2020, Facebook[3] user Jody Suryanto uploaded the video with same format. The post received more than 676 reactions and 2,100 shares (shown below).

The trend also has seen a sizable presence on YouTube. On May 17th, 2020, YouTuber ggabe posted an edit that gained over 6,300 views (shown below, left). On May 16th, user Screwy posted an edit that gained over 9,900 views (shown below, right).
