How Do You Draw an X? is a viral debate and survey about how people write the letter "X," based on a diagram offering eight options.
Origin
On January 19th, 2019, Twitter [1] user @SMASEY tweeted, "Also this is so interesting to me – which way do you draw an X? Colored line being the first stroke." They included a diagram of eight options, indicating which direction people could move their writing utensil in order to make the letter. The tweet received more than 14,000 retweets and 60,000 likes in two days (shown below).
Spread
Following the post, many responded to the tweets by naming which direction they move their writing instrument (examples below, left and center).
The following day, on January 20th, @SMASEY tweeted,[2] "General consensus is that Americans do 7 & 8 while UK does 5 & 6. Probably how we were taught. Not sure about other countries." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 900 retweets and 9,900 likes (shown below, right).
That day, Twitter[3] published a Moments page regarding the debate. Several media outlets discussed the debate, including Mashable, [4] NBC,[5] ABC,[6] The Daily Mail[7]
