I Am No Longer Mentally Ill is a catchphrase popularized through an image macro of actor Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal with his arms outstretched. The meme was originally posted to /r/MemeEconomy in December 2020 and spread as a reaction image and in further image macros over the following years.

Origin

On December 2nd, 2020, Redditor KyloRenKardashian posted an image macro to /r/MemeEconomy^[1] showing an image of Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal under yellow text reading, "I am no longer mentally ill," captioned, "me after cleaning my room and doing my laundry," garnering over 2,400 upvotes in two years (shown below). The meme was reposted to Tumblr^[2] by anxietyproblem the next day, garnering over 8,900 notes in two years and Instagram^[3] page ocd_and_positivity on December 4th, garnering over 9,300 likes in the same general span of time.

Spread

The meme then spread over the following years to other platforms. On April 22nd, 2021, Instagram^[4] user adhd_memetherapy posted a new image macro using the image, garnering over 18,400 likes in a year (shown below, left). On June 10th, Twitter^[5] user @benyahr posted a meme using the image, garnering over 700 likes in a year (shown below, right).

On August 18th, 2021, Instagram^[6] user parasocialism posted an edit of the image captioned, "I just took a shower i am no longer mentally ill," garnering over 52,000 views in a year (shown below). I was reposted to Twitter^[7] on August 26th, garnering over 100,000 likes and 14,000 retweets in the same rough span of time.

On October 20th, 2022, Twitter^[8] user @Kai_Texel posted a redraw of the meme using James Sunderland from the Silent Hill 2 Remake, garnering over 4,900 likes in a week (shown below).
