About

Silent Hill 2 Remake is an upcoming remake of the 2001 psychological horror video game Silent Hill 2. Announced in October 2022 and developed by Bloober Team, the game became a subject of viral discussions online.

History

On October 16th, 2022, KONAMI[1] announced upcoming news regarding its psychological horror video game series Silent Hill. On the same day, information that a remake of the critically acclaimed 2001 video game Silent Hill 2 was in development by Bloober Team was leaked.

On October 19th, 2022, the game was officially announced, with the announcement trailer released. The trailer for the game was released, gaining over 2.1 million views on Twitter[2] and over 2.3 million views on YouTube[3] in two days (shown below).

On January 31st, 2024, a combat trailer for the game was revealed, gaining over 879,000 views in one week (shown below). However, the game did not receive a release window.

Online Reactions

The announcement of the game was met with mixed reactions from fans of the original. In particular, some fans were not enthused that the remake would be handled by Bloober team. Some fans voiced that Bloober's history shows they are competent at making atmospheric horror but are not equipped to handle the psychological and complex elements that made the original so beloved.[4] After the release of the first trailer, Twitter user NitroRad[6] wrote, "RIP Silent Hill," gaining over 740 retweets and 7,100 likes in over a year (shown below, left). User @Thafnine[7] posted a similar meme expressing disappointment, gaining over 20 retweets and 520 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).

After the release of the combat trailer, Screenrant[5] published an article expressing concern about Bloober's handling of the upcoming game. The article noted that the third-person shooter feel displayed in the trailer was not in line with the less-combat-focused original, and they expressed fear that the game could be headed in a generic direction. Dexerto[8] posted an article about Bloober's design for protagonist James Sunderland, writing they made him "too hot." They felt it indicated Bloober was trying to fit Silent Hill 2 into the Resident Evil 4 mold, which would not be the right fit for the game.
