I Dropped X Because It Was Boring is a caption and phrasal template frequently used in conjunction with the Digging for Diamonds meme format, most commonly used to imply that a certain franchise is terrible. Spawned by a viral meme about the anime One Piece, the format saw active use in 2022 and 2023.

Origin

On June 8th, 2022, iFunny[1] user Stupid posted a Digging for Diamonds meme about the lengthy anime series One Piece, cropping the template to just an image of a man walking away and replacing the diamonds in the original image with trash bags. The post (shown below) was featured and received over 12,300 smiles in two years.

Spread

The image saw viral spread online in the following months. For example, on June 23rd, 2022, X[2] user @GetIndimidated made a viral, since-deleted repost that received over 13,500 reposts and 197,000 likes prior to removal. An October 27th, repost by X[3] user @RedLightning420 received over 9,800 reposts and 135,000 likes in one year.

On June 24th, 2022, X[4][5] users @JohnnySpittin and @Saitamagoated posted the earliest found derivative versions of the meme, with the posts (shown below, left and right) receiving over 2,500 reposts and 22,000 likes and 1,400 reposts and 6,300 likes, respectively, in two years.

More variants of the format appeared starting in July 2022. For example, on July 15th, 2022, Redditor AggresssiveResist8615 posted a Kim Wexler's Feet meme based on the format that received over 4,700 reposts in the /r/okbuddychicanery[6] subreddit in two years (shown below, left). Also that day, Tumblr[7] user cikero posted an Overwatch meme that received over 1,400 reposts in two years (shown below, right).

Three. You get THREE episodes to be interesting. That's long enough for a movie to go start to finish it's long enough for you to at least establish what you even are. It wasn't a defense back when Final Fantasy XIII came out to say it got good 'ten hours in' and it's not a defense now.

Showing respect for your viewer's time is important because it's the most overtaxed resource there is.

I think one of the best media about this is actually Anime, where you get tricks like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood making a special first episode after they'd already known the entire story that encapsulates and foreshadows the whole thing, or literally every isekai, where after watching the first episode you have pretty much seen EVERY episode and 100% of the plot.
