I Think I Downloaded the Wrong Movie refers to a series of image macros featuring the text "I think I downloaded the wrong" followed by the title of a film or series attached to a screenshot from a knockoff version of the film, often an adult film parody.

Origin

On April 4th, 2017, Threeonagoodday uploaded an image macro to Imgur[1] with top text reading, "I think i downloaded the wrong Power Rangers" attached to an image from a Power Rangers adult film parody (shown below). The image gained over 57,874 views in roughly 3 years and is the earliest known upload of the meme.

Spread

The Power Rangers meme spread over the course of the year through various reposts,[2][3][4] inspiring new versions of the meme. On September 24th, 2017, DanyBoss uploaded an image macro to Imgur[5] reading, "I think I downloaded the wrong IT movie" featuring an image of a clown and a woman embracing, garnering over 198,900 views and 3,400 upvotes in roughly 3 years (shown below, left).

On December 7th, MrTechnicalDifficult posted a Grinch themed version of the meme to Facebook,[7] garnering over 18,000 reactions and 5,200 shares in just over 3 years (shown below, right).

On December 14th, Lauringa posted a Star Wars themed version of the meme to Imgur,[6] garnering over 4,100 views in just over 3 years (shown below). The image was reposted to Imgur[9] by KinderSurpriseMF in March of 2018, garnering over 155,000 views in just under 3 years.

On May 31st, 2018, eBaum's World [8] featured a collection of "I Think I Downloaded the Wrong Movie" memes, garnering over 66,500 views in roughly 2 years.

On February 13th, 2019, /u/StSpyro made a post titled, "I think i downloaded the wrong Infinity War" along with an edited image from 2019's Aladdin to /r/thanosdidnothingwrong,[10] garnering over 20,500 upvotes in 2 years (shown below, left).

On April 29th, 2019, Worldstar Hip Hop posted an Avengers themed version of the meme to Facebook,[11] garnering over 24,800 reactions and 13,200 shares (shown below, right). The meme was originally posted to Imgur[12] in May of 2018, garnering over 212,000 views in roughly 2 years.

On January 28th, 2021, everynightxRIOT reacted to Godzilla vs. Kong memes on YouTube,[13] including one using the "I Think I Downloaded The Wrong Movie" template at 8:29, (shown below) garnering over 100,000 views in a week.

The phrase is frequently used in YouTube titles in order to put suggestive images in the thumbnail, particularly by YouTuber MxR Plays.[14][15]
