I Was Reading About How Autistic Folks Often Cheat refers to memes and jokes about a viral and controversial post on X that implied that "autistic folks" are more prone to cheating in a relationship as a result of them being unable to read non-verbal cues. Jokes about the catchphrase as well as memes following the phrasal template "I was reading about how autistic people" began making the rounds on X in early July 2024.

On June 30th, 2024, X[1] user @NoEmmeG made a post that read, "I was reading something about how autistic folks often cheat in relationships but its due to not catching the non-verbal cues that signify the beginning of a relationship or the boundaries in romantic relationships. im like fuckkkkkkkk." The post gathered over 6,000 quote tweets and 3,000 likes in four days (seen below).
The post received critical replies soon after it was posted, with many people pushing back on the idea of using autism as an excuse for cheating. On June 30th, 2024, X[2] user @willsgardevoir wrote, "there is no such thing as a nonverbal cue that signifies the beginning of a relationship," while X[3] user @Neoncaffeine called the post a personal "cope."

On July 1st, X[5] user @foolayosh posted an edited venn diagram joking about "cheating" being a common trait among people with ADHD, autism, and "giftedness" (seen below, right).
On July 2nd, 2024, X[6] user @tristandross posted a joke following the phrasal format of the original tweet, writing, "I was reading something about how autistic folks often embezzle company funds but its due to not catching the non-verbal cues that signify the outlines of corporate financial policies and mechanism," and gathering over 66,000 likes in two days (seen below, top).
Also on July 2nd, 2024, X[7] user @jetskitosway2 posted a tweet that read, "I was reading about how autistic people often use uncleared samples but its due to not catching the non-verbal cues that signify the boundaries of copyright infringement," gathering over 7,000 likes in two days (seen below).
