About

The Ice Cream Challenge, also known as the #IceCreamChallenge, Ice Cream Licking Challenge and the Tin Roof Challenge, refers to an internet challenge in which participants remove the lid from a container of ice cream and lick across the top before placing it back in a grocery store freezer for an unsuspecting customer to purchase. In late June 2019, the challenge was widely criticized as unhygienic following the circulation of a viral video in which a woman performed the challenge with a container of Blue Bell's Tin Roof ice cream at a Walmart store in Lufkin, Texas.

Origin

On June 28th, 2019, a video began circulating online of a woman opening a container of Blue Bell's Tin Roof ice cream, licking the top and placing it back in a store freezer. The video hit social media June 28, launching an investigation that led from Walmart stores in San Antonio to Houston and eventually Lufkin. Early this week social media commenters identified the woman seen licking a half-gallon of Tin Roof as being from San Antonio. The search then went to Houston Walmart stores after investigators learned the identified woman may be living with a boyfriend in that area. Again, a store display case matching the one in the video could not be found. Earlier this morning, Blue Bell corporate instructed all of its division managers to see if they could identify the store location. Within an hour of the corporate plea, a Lufkin division manager called, saying he believed it was Lufkin Walmart.
