I'll Build My Own Wall refers to a webcomic drawn by artist cheit.jpg depicting a woman who builds a wall to be safe from weapons attacking her from the other side. The webcomic became a popular exploitable template in the 2020s, as people joked about the various things that could break the wall.
Origin
On October 17th, 2020, Instagram[1] user @cheit.jpg uploaded a webcomic as a part of Inktober. It depicts a woman who builds a wall brick by brick so that she can be safe from the attacks from the other side of the wall, although it will make her alone, metaphorically symbolizing her protecting herself from hurt. The post received more than 54,000 likes in four years (shown below).
Spread
In the following years, the webcomic became a popular exploitable meme template, as users edited it jokes about what would break the wall. For example, on April 11th, 2021, Reddit[2] user Nintendork7950 uploaded an edit to /r/memes that added the Kool-Aid Man to the comic. The post received over 100,000 points in three years (shown below).
On October 19th, 2024, Facebook[3] page PH Chemistry uploaded an edit that featured a science-related diagram to the piece. The post received over 18,000 reactions and 3,100 shares in one week (shown below).
