Individual 1 refers to a series of jokes and references to an unnamed person in federal prosecutor's office sentencing recommendations for United States President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen. Many have speculated that President Trump is "Individual-1."
Origin
On December 7th, 2018, the special prosecutors submitted sentencing recommendation for President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen.[1] In the court filing, a party known as "Individual-1" was named as the coordinator of the payments to adult film actor Stormy Daniels and Stephanie Cliffords and Karen McDougal in regards to alleged affairs with Donald Trump.
Following the posts, many online speculated that "Individual-1" was President Trump. BuzzFeed legal editor Chris Geidner tweeted [2] an screen capture of the court filing and wrote, "I think we can NOW safely say that Individual-1 is Donald Trump, all." The post received more than 680 retweets and 1,800 likes in three days (shown below).
Spread
Throughout the day, many made jokes that implied President Trump is Individual-1. Twitter[3] user @bobcesca_go tweeted, "Individual 1 (Biff) is so screwed" (shown below, left). Twitter[4] user @bellafortunate tweeted a variation of the Trump Yelling at Lawn-mowing Boy meme with the caption, "YOU'RE IN BIG TROUBLE INDIVIDUAL 1" (shown below, center). Twitter[5] user @CharlesPPierce posted a GIF from the telelvision series Law & Order (shown below, right).
Following the news, President Trump tweeted,[6] "Totally clears the President. Thank you!" The tweet received more than 23,000 retweets and 111,000 likes in three days (shown below).
His post led to even more memes about Individual-1. Twitter[7] user @ClatisC tweeted an Dancing ASCII Man with the text "You are Individual 1" (shown below, left). Throughout the day, more made jokes in which they shared Trump's post with a reference to how they speculated that he
