About

"Insert Cash or Select Payment Type" refers to a prompt in NCR SelfServ Checkout machines, most often used at Walmart, asking customers about their preferred method of payment for their order. The prompt, followed by "Use pinpad to complete transaction" and "Thank you for shopping at Walmart", became a meme in early to mid-2022 as numerous YouTubers used it in ironic and unexpected ways.

Origin

While it's unclear which video first used the self-checkout audio, one of the earliest known videos to do so was posted on February 19th, 2022 by YouTuber BoringNiko,[1] who had it play over a static image of a cat. The video gained over 22,000 views in nearly six months (shown below).

Spread

On May 3rd, 2022, YouTuber Quandale Dingle posted the first iteration of the meme to gain a significant amount of views, as their odd clip gained over 882,000 views in three months (shown below).

From there, the audio was used in numerous videos, often pairing the audio with similarly nonsensical footage. The same day as Quandale Dingle's upload, YouTuber jinx baloongis gaming posted a clip iwth the audio that gained over 4,400 views (shown below, left). On July 23rd, YouTuber ツ paired the audio with the Squidward 'Get Out Of My House' meme, gaining over 13,000 views in two weeks (shown below, right).
