Inside the Cake is an exploitable image series created from a still from the 2015 My Little Pony movie Equestria Girls: Friendship Games. It typically consists of comic-style images with three panels; characters Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy are shown in the first two panels displaying the inside of a cake, while the third panel shows the reactions of Celestia, Luna, and Cadence. The images are popular within the My Little Pony fandom.

Origin

The frames used in the meme are taken from the 2015 My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic spin-off movie, Equestria Girls: Friendship Games.^[1] During the judging of a cake-baking contest, Pinkie Pie is shown cutting her cake in two and sliding one half away to reveal a reproduction of the "Mona Lisa"^[2] by Leonardo da Vinci (shown @ 0:35 below).

Spread

The original set of frames from the movie^[7] were posted to the MLP image hosting site Derpibooru on September 27th (shown below, left). The first example showing memetic mutation^[4] was a submission featuring the droste effect, uploaded on the same day (shown below, right). As of the 4th of October, there are over 24 images tagged with "inside the cake meme" on Derpibooru.^[5] The highest-rated variation,^[6] featuring a crossover with another MLP meme "Pinkie's Refrigerator," currently has over 200 upvotes (shown in Various Examples section).

The first use of the scene as an exploitable image on 4chan's /mlp/ board was a thread posted on September 28th and archived shortly afterwards.^[3] It began with the OP posting three sequential frames from the original movie; later in the thread, another user suggested that the middle frame would work as a template for an exploitable meme (shown below).
