Is That a Starbucks Cake Pop? refers to a viral video where a man approaches a woman holding a cake pop and asks in a high pitched voice if she's holding a Starbucks cake pop, then reaches out and squishes the cake pop between his fingers. The video inspired a trend on TikTok where users squish other people's cake pops set to the sound, as well as a trend where users do similar things while speaking in a high pitched or "baby" voice.

Origin

On July 22nd, 2021, TikTioker[1] @cakepopguy posted an acted video where he approaches a girl from behind who is regularly in his videos and says "excuse me." When she turns he gasps and asks, "is that a Starbucks cake pop?" in a high pitched voice. He then reaches out and grabs the cake pop between two fingers, says "cake pop" again and squishes the cake pop (shown below). The video gained over 37.9 million views in roughly two months.

The original sound for @cakepopguy's video became notably popular on TikTok over the course of August and September 2021 as people filmed themselves squishing peoples' cake pops over the narration, usually in planned skits. On August 3rd, for example, TikToker[2] @carlylawrence6 posted a video where someone squishes her cake pop, gaining over 24 million views in two months (shown below, left). On August 8th, TikToker[3] @dazzledazzler posted a video squishing a Starbucks employee's cake pop, gaining over 31 million views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right). The original sound has inspired over 42,000 videos by October 5th.

On the same day, YouTuber[4] ThatTokPlug posted a compilation of videos using the sound, gaining over 288,000 views in two months (shown below).
