About
Jarvis Commands or Jarvis, Do X refers to a series of memes in which Tony Stark orders his AI assistant Jarvis to do perform various tasks, usually tasking the AI with creating a certain meme. Originating from a viral GIF caption, the format gained notable popularity in 2020.
Origin
On May 2nd, 2008, Marvel superhero film Iron Man premiered.[1] In the film and it's sequels, main protagonist Tony Stark often orders his AI assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. to perform various tasks (example scene shown below).
Prior to mainstream popularity of the meme format in 2020, several notable examples were posted online. On October 31st, 2013, Tumblr[2] user thesandysparrowhawk made a humorous post imagining Tony Stark commanding Jarvis to get Pikachu to use Tackle move (shown below, left). The post received over 70,000 likes and reblogs in eight years.
On April 9th, 2018, iFunny[3] user Iowan posted a Sam Hyde Iron Man meme captioned "Jarvis, target Israel" (shown below, right). The post received 48 smiles in three years. On November 24th, 2018, iFunny[4] user AlbinoZelot remade the post, gaining over 1,200 smiles in three years.
On March 14th, 2020, iFunny[5] user MulletBird posted a GIF Caption in which Tony Stark instructs Jarvis to create a Wojak meme (shown below). The post received over 6,100 smiles in one year.
Spread
In the following weeks, the GIF captions saw viral spread online through reposts. In July 2020, earliest notable derivative memes were posted online, with users imagining Tony Stark giving Jarvis instructions to create specific memes. For example, on July 6th, 2020, iFunny[6] user IWannaFuckMorshu posted a meme that gained 30 smiles in eight months (shown below, left). On August 30th, 2020, Twitter[7] user @tranos_car posted the first viral derivative version, a What Zero Pussy Does to a MF meme (shown below, right) that gained over 1,400 retweets and 5,700 likes and was widely circulated online in the following months.
Following the viral spread of @tranos_car's post, the GIF caption format in which users imagined Tony Stark giving Jarvis various instructions, usually for making memes, gained significant popularity online, particularly on Twitter, iFunny and in /r/okbuddyretard subreddit.
