Joker Tongue, also known as Freaky Joker or Joker Tongue Out, refers to a series of memes using a panel from the 1996 The Joker: Devil’s Advocate comic book in which the Batman villain Joker is with his tongue out while staring towards a woman. The panel has been used as a reaction and a caption meme since early 2008, gaining viral usage in the 2020s on TikTok, Instagram and Reddit as an image macro related to an unusual behavior or desire.

Origin

Although it's unclear when the exact first usage of the Joker tongue was posted online, the reverse image search engine TinEye^[1] shows that the panel taken from the 1996 The Joker: Devil’s Advocate^[2] comic book has been used as the profile picture in several blogs since February 2008. On August 12th, 2012, Deviant Art^[3] uploaded one of the earliest found fan arts related to the Freaky Joker panel (seen below), receiving roughly 59 views in 13 years.

On November 28th, 2024, Instagram^[3] user @nyquil uploaded one of the first viral Joker Tongue memes, adding the caption "this been me lately," which amassed over 568 likes in eight months.

Spread

The Freaky Joker panel saw more use within fandoms on Reddit, Instagram and TikTok as an image macro and reaction image depicting a feeling of desire or perversion towards a character. For instance, on April 17th, 2025, TikTok^[4] user @babywiggs used the Joker Tongue meme alongside a macro about ragebaiting a friend during an online game (seen below), which garnered roughly 35,000 plays and 663 likes in three months.

On June 19th, 2025, Redditor u/OkNatural9210 posted the Joker Tongue meme to the r/TeensofKerala^[5] subreddit channel to start a thread about the "craziest thing you saw or heard in your college or school." The post (seen below) received roughly 44 upvotes and 96 comments in a week.
