About
Lambda Male is a slang term for a satirical male personality type that is largely used to parody male personality types such as Alpha Male, Beta Male and Sigma Male. Multiple humorous definitions for a Lambda Male have been provided since early 2021, including definitions referencing to Half-Life, physics and programming.
Origin
Jokes about Lamda Males started with the popularization of pseudoscientific male personality types such as "alpha male" and "beta male" in the late 2010s. On September 28th, 2020, Urban Dictionary[1] user It's a stone Ruigi added a definition for Lambda Male to the site, bringing the Half-Life protagonist Gordon Freeman as an example. In Half-Life games, Gordon Freeman has the greek letter Lambda λ, which is also a symbol in physics, on his environmental protection suit.

The jokes increased in 2021 as Sigma Male memes, and later Sigma Grindset memes, were increasingly popularized. For example, on January 25th, 2021, Twitter[2] user @existentialcoms posted a joke that gained over 120 retweets and 1,180 likes in one year (shown below).

On June 11th, 2021, Instagram[3] user @dennislikesjazz posted an Ed, Edd n Eddie meme that gained over 52,000 views and 5,500 likes in a year (shown below).
More memes about Lambda Males were posted in June and July 2021 as Sigma Male memes peaked in popularity. For example, on June 28th, 2021, Redditor biencriado posted a history meme that gained over 120 upvotes in /r/historymemes[4] in one year (shown below, left). On July 20th, 2021, Twitter user @Skiddo posted another Half-Life meme that gained over 240 retweets and 1,000 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
On October 17th, 2022, Twitter[5] user @ByYourLogic posted a joke about Lambda Males being "a new type of man that gets and keeps out women by constantly going to the hospital," referring to actor Jason Sudeikis. The tweet (shown below, left) gained over 550 retweets and 11,900 likes in two days and was followed by more memes about "Lambda Males" who fall under the provided definition in the following hours (example shown below, right).
