Laser Eyes Bitcoin Trend refers to a February 2021 social media trend among Bitcoin holders participants of which edit their profile pictures by adding the Laser Eyes effect. The trend is associated with #LaserRayUntil100K hashtag which indicates that those changing their profile pictures should keep them until the price of Bitcoin reaches 100,000 US Dollars.

Origin

On February 16th, 2021, Twitter[1] user @CHAIRFORCE_BTC altered their profile picture by giving it Laser Eyes, tweeting #LaserRayUntil100K hashtag and a You Guys Always Act Like You're Better Than Me meme (tweet and meme shown below, left and right). The hashtag indicated the intention to keep the altered profile picture until the price of cryptocurrency Bitcoin, worth approximately $50,000 on February 16th, reaches $100,000.

On the same day, several Twitter[2][3][4] users changed their profile pictures to have laser eyes and shared the hashtag (example tweets shown below).

On February 19th, US senator Cynthia Lummis, a Bitcoin investor since 2013, changed[5][6] her Twitter profile picture to have laser eyes (shown below). Later on the same day, US senator Warren Davidson also changed his Twitter[7] profile picture.

In addition to Lummis, several other notable Bitcoin investor and cryptocurrency proponents changed their profile pictures, including MicroStrategy founder Michael Saylor, Winklevoss twins and the official account for cryptocurrency exchange Binance.[10]

In the following days, several news outlets reported on the spread of the Laser Eyes meme among bitcoin investors and traders, including Forbes[8] and Slate.[9]
