About
LEGO Dam Breach Videos refer to a YouTube trend of videos in which water breaches miniature dams, flooding LEGO settlements built behind them. Popularized by the YouTube channel King of Dams, the trend achieved viral status in 2023, with multiple copycat channels joining in.
Origin
On August 2nd, 2017, the YouTube[1] channel King of Dams posted a one-and-a-half-minute video titled "Lego Dam Breach," in which water breached through a miniature sand dam to flood several LEGO workers and an excavator placed behind it. The video (shown below) gained over 29,000 views in six years.
The channel adopted the dam breach theme for most of its feature content, posting over 610 videos in six years. Many of the dam breach videos posted on the channel went viral on YouTube: for example, on September 10th, 2019, the channel posted a video[2] titled "LEGO DAM BREACH AND SAND CASTLE – TOTAL FLOOD AND DESTROY" which received over 31 million views in four years (shown below, left). On November 30th, 2019, the channel uploaded[3] "LEGO DAM BREACH – NEW SAND CITY COLLAPSE," with the video accumulating over 17 million views in four years (shown below, right).
Spread
The viral success of King of Dams inspired copycat channels on YouTube. On July 13th, 2018, YouTube[4] channel DenisovFIlm posted its first LEGO dam breach video, gaining over 32,000 views. A video posted by the channel[5] on October 1st, 2021, received over 6.8 million views in two years (shown below, left). On June 20th, 2021, YouTube[6] channel Brick Play Replay uploaded its first LEGO dam breach video which garnered over 4.4 million views in two years (shown below, right).
More YouTube channels joined the trend in early 2023, including DangerousMoment,[7] Best of Dam Experiments,[8] Dam Breach[9] and King of Dam Breach.[10]
The trend also found reflection in memes: for example, on April 25th, 2022, artist @ennecorreia tweeted[11] a two-panel comic about the trend that received 10 retweets and over 90 likes (shown below).
