About

#LockdownExtended is a hashtag used on Twitter to spread news and memes regarding the quarantine imposed by governments and suggested by health officials to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Origin

On March 22nd, 2020, Twitter account @BansalNewsbpl posted the earliest known usage of the hashtag in regards to the coronavirus (shown below). Before this, many used the hashtag in a variety of contexts.

Spread

Over the next month, as the quarantine and imposed isolations continued, people began using the hashtag in conjunction with memes. One of the earliest, posted by @anyway_will [1] a variation of the Woman Yelling at a Cat meme, featured a joke about how long the quarantine would last (shown below, left).

The next few weeks saw increased usage of the hashtag. On April 10th, Twitter[2] account @KyloIsSad posted a meme using an image from Star Wars The Last Jedi that received more than 2,000 likes and 395 retweets in less than one week (shown below, center). Twitter[3] user @ikpsgill1 tweeted a photograph of an eye doctor's office in which they are the doctor and the patients with the hashtag "#LockdownExtended." The tweet received more than 4,400 likes and 470 retweets in less than three days (shown below, right).

On April 14th, StayHipp[4] published an article about the hashtag.
