About

Lucario is a dual Fighting/Steel Pokemon that first appeared in the film Lucario and the Mystery of Mew before it's official release in the fourth generation titles. Since it's debut, Lucario has been a consistent fan favorite, appearing in multiple spin-off games and being voted the second favorite overall Poke'mon in 2020.

Origin

Lucario was introduced to fans in an unconventional way, through appearing as the main character in a feature length film before it's game even came out. In July 2005 the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew came out in Japan, featuring the titular Poke'mon and showcasing some of it's moves and powerful abilities. Despite being shown as able to communicate through telepathy, the Poke'mon ended up being Fighting/Steel typing. On May 13th, 2020, the official YouTube[1] for the Poke'mon company uploaded the trailer for the movie, receiving over 755,000 views in three years (shown below).

Reception

Since the debut game, Lucario had been consistent included in other games and media, with consistent support being shown by the company. This is seen with Lucario's inclusion in Pokken Tournament as well as Super Smash Brothers Brawl. When mega evolutions were introduced in Generation VI, Lucario was one of the main featured Poke'mon to have a mega evolution, with the player being handed a Lucario in the middle of the game. On September 12th, 2016, YouTuber rpggamer16[2] uploaded the various intro, victory, and defeat poses Lucario uses within Pokken Tournament DX with one victory screen showing off it's mega form (shown below).

Poke'mon Of The Year Runner-Up

In 2020, The Poke'mon Company partnered with Google to set up a poll allowing people to vote on their favorite Poke'mon in a two week long process. Lucario ended up being voted into the second slot[3] with over 102,000 votes. This is seen as especially powerful considering the winner Greninja has recency bias in being released seven years later than Lucario, and having a bigger role in the anime in the years leading up to the poll (shown below).
