Man Throwing Bottle at Drone, also known as Couple Throwing Bottles at Drone or Guy Throwing Beer at Camera, is a photograph of an Australian man throwing an empty bottle of Queensland Great Northern beer at a drone taken from the drone's perspective. The photo was originally posted to the /r/straya subreddit in December 2017 and gained viral spread over the following years, inspiring memes including image macros and redraws.
Origin
On December 24th, 2017, Redditor u/wowzap posted a drone photo to /r/straya[1] of a man throwing a bottle at the drone, writing, "Don't fly ya fuckin' drone over my backyard c---," garnering over 1,200 upvotes in seven years (shown below).
Spread
On July 24th, 2019, the satirical Facebook[2] page Portsmouth Ohio Official posted the photograph with a description posing as the police asking residents not to throw things at their police drones. Many commenters fell for the post and demanded the police stop flying drones over private property, arguing that it is an invasion of privacy. The post gained over 36,000 reactions and 111,000 shares in five years (shown below).
On March 11th, 2021, the post was shared on Tumblr,[8] garnering over 120,000 notes in three years. On May 15th, the image was reposted to /r/blursedimages[3] titled "blursed drone shot," garnering over 46,000 upvotes in three years. On May 17th, Daily Mail[4] reported on the virality of the image.
On February 3rd, 2023, X[5] user @runews posted a Chinese spy balloon meme using the image that gained over 5,700 likes in a year (shown below, left). On April 14th, Redditor u/WheashWheash posted a redraw of the meme to /r/deadbydaylight,[6] garnering over 4,200 upvotes in a year (shown below, right).
On April 8th, 2024, X[7] user @gutterpunks posted an Aqua Teen Hunger Force redraw of the meme depicting the man throwing the bottle as the character Carl Brutananadilewski, garnering over 15,000 likes in a week (shown below).
