O Lapada Seca refers to an image macro of The Mask cartoon character paired with the Portuguese text "O lapada seca," which is a popular Brazilian online expression used when someone is humiliated or receives a harsh response in an online argument. The image was popularized as a moldy meme format on iFunny in January 2023 and is often used as a reaction image on social media.
Origin
On January 3rd, 2023, iFunny user @jair_angolano asked if anyone in the comment section of a post knew any TV show with no happy ending, to which a user sarcastically responded "Your life." User @jair_angolano answered the comment with an image from the 1995 The Mask: Animated Series paired with the text in Portuguese "O lapada seca," which is a Brazilian expression associated with situations of physical violence, where someone is hit quickly and intensely with no chance of adequate reaction or defense. The interaction was posted on iFunny[1] by user @Torres169, garnering 9,800 reactions and 269 comments in six months (shown below).

The meme quickly spread among iFunny community users. For example, iFunny[2] user @EL_PICHULA posted a Yu-Gi-Oh! trap card version of the meme(shown below, left) on January 12th, 2023, garnering eight reactions in six months. An edited picture of Brazilian singer MC Daniel wearing a hat similar to The Mask's was turned into a meme (shown below, right) by iFunny[3] user @Temeteu_Pinto on January 6th, 2023, receiving six reactions in six months.
On January 26th, 2023, YouTube[4] user Viniciusaraujo8837 posted a video mimicking The Mask's dubbed voice saying the expression "o lapada seca." The video (shown below) garnered 6,100 views and 237 likes in six months.
On Twitter, the meme is used as a reaction image. For example, on June 26th, 2023, Twitter[5] page @olapadaseca shared a sceenshot of a Facebook conversation where user @yxmatheuz uploaded a variation of the "lapada seca" meme to express his reaction. The post (shown below) garnered 45 likes in one day.
