The Mask is a film and comic book franchise about a supernatural mask that grants magical powers of chaos to whomever wears it. Beginning as a comic book series, The Mask inspired to feature films The Mask (1994) and The Son of the Mask (2005), an animated series and a video game.

History

Comic Book

The character The Mask, then known as "Masque" first appeared in the comic book "Dark Horse Presents #10.[1] Two years later, in May 1989, the first issue of Stanely Ipkiss, the Mask's alter ego, appeared in the comic book Mayhem (cover below, left). The character continued to appear in several limited series, specials and spin-offs and crossovers (example below, right).[2]

Motion Picture Series

The Mask (1994)

On July 29th, 1994, New Line Cinema released a film adaptation of The Mask. The film stars Jim Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss, as well as Cameron Diaz, Amy Yasbeck, Peter Riegert and Peter Greene. The Mask grossed more than $351 million worldwide and received one Academy Award nomination (trailer below).[3]



Son of the Mask (2005)

On February 18th, 2005, a sequel, Son of the Mask, was released in the United States. The film stars Jamie Kennedy and Alan Cumming and grossed more than $59 million at the worldwide box office (trailer below).[4]



Other Media

Animated Series

Beginning in 1995, an animated spin-off of The Mask film aired the first of three seasons. The series ran for 54 episodes (clip below).

In October 1995, a video game adaptation of the Mask film was released for the Super Nintendo in the United States (clip below).



Smockin'

Smockin' is an intentional misspelling of the catchphrase "smoking" uttered by the protagonist in the 1994 comedy film The Mask, which is often associated with a photograph of Jim Carrey's costumed stunt double from the film.
