Mega Punch or Anime Punch refers to a first-person POV photograph of a man slumped into a chainlink fence, knocked out, at the end of a trail of broken concrete, the photographer's fist held out in front of the camera as if he just punched him, sending him flying against the fence. The image was first posted to Reddit in 2013 and became the subject of object labeling memes, image macros and redraws in the following years.
Origin
On August 12th, 2013, Redditor HerrBubbler posted a photograph to r/pics[1] showing their friend slumped over a chainlink fence as if knocked out at the end of a trail of broken concrete, the photographer's fist held out in front of him as if he just punched the knocked out man and sent him flying into the fence, writing, "My friend took advantage of certain construction problems to take this photo" (shown below). The post gained over 2,700 upvotes in nine years.
Spread
The image became the subject of memes that year, becoming increasingly popular throughout the 2010s. For example, on September 5th, 2013, a version of the meme was posted to viralviralvideos.com[2] reading, "next time wipe your hands before touching my controller" (shown below, left). In 2014, the image was featured in a Buzzfeed[5] collection. On November 16th, 2016, Facebook[4] page Legit Lady Gamers posted another gaming meme using the image, gaining over 190 reactions in six years (shown below, right).
On August 1st, 2018, a labeled version of the meme was posted to r/MemeEconomy,[6] gaining over 3,300 upvotes in four years (shown below, left.) The image also became the subject of redraws and photoshops. For example, on October 19th, Twitter[7] user @DiegoGTRatty posted a photoshop replacing the fist with a Minecraft fist, gaining over 45 likes in four years (shown below, right).
On April 12th, Tumblr[8] user selynnkino posted a Sonic the Hedgehog redraw of the image showing Sonic slumped into the fence with Knuckles fist in front of him, gaining over 2,700 notes in nine days (shown below). On April 14th, 2022, Twitter[3] user @dillmen posted a similar redraw, gaining over 18,000 likes and 3,200 retweets in a week (shown below, right).
