About
Miles and Peni Shipping refers to a fan art and shipping pairing main protagonist Miles Morales and supporting character Peni Parker from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in a relationship. A noticeable uptick in artwork of the two characters occurred around mid-June 2023, particularly on the Spanish-speaking side of Twitter.
History
On June 12th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @AlexicoReborn tweeted fan art of Peni telling Miles he left his drawing book at her house, with Gwen Stacy in the next panels showing shock and anger at Miles, who reacts to Gwen sheepishly. The tweet gained over 3,100 retweets, 42,200 likes and 1.4 million views (shown below):
Later that same day, Twitter[2] user @DELQ_Drawings posted a webcomic of a different scenario involving Miles, Peni, Gwen, and Miguel O'Hara. The tweet gained over 1,200 retweets,13,600 likes and 630,000 views (shown below):

Over the following weeks, Twitter users began creating art of the two characters together in varying situations. On June 15th, 2023, Twitter[3] user @Gal6Spring tweeted a drawing of Miles hanging upside down with Peni on the ground blushing in admiration, gaining over 750 retweets, 9,200 likes and 201k views (shown below, left). On July 19th, Twitter[4] user @DelsurFortnite posted a fan art of Peni wearing a cat headband to attract Miles' attention despite Gwen's presence, gaining over 120 retweets, 1,350 likes and 28.7k views (shown below, right).
The pairing of the characters also saw some traction on other social media sites. For example, on June 15th, Facebook[5] user Many's Art posted a webcomic of Peni stealing a kiss from Miles, gaining 5.9k likes and 2.3k shares (shown below, left). On June 18th, Instagram[6] user @roier_26 posted a drawing showing Miles and Peni making a heart hand, gaining 21 likes in a span of 3 days (shown below, right).
While there have been depictions that have been romantic or playful, there have also been artworks that show a more platonic relationship between the two. Twitter[7] user @Glphed uploaded a drawing of Peni in her SP//dr suit in a more depressed state, having an exchange with Miles. Posted on June 16th, the tweet gained over 800 retweets, 6,500 likes and 169,000 views (shown below, left). Another Twitter[8] user, @TetraOctopus posted a more optimistic exchange between Miles and Peni, picturing an alternate scenario of them having an extended exchange. Posted on June 17th, the Spanish version gained over 500 retweets, 3,900 likes and 120,000 views, while the English[9] version gained 280 retweets, 2,200 likes and 125,000 views (shown below, right).
Fan Reception
The reception of the pairing has been positive. On June 16th, Twitter[10] user @EnjoyerFive posited a theory as to why the ship is more popular among Spanish-speaking users, arguing that Miles helps Spider-people become happier. This is in reference to Peni being shown in the Peni Parker Is An Evangelion Character Theory as more depressed due to her brief but solemn appearance in Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, and Miles helping Peni in the artworks as wholesome. The tweet gained over 400 retweets, 3,000 likes and 120,000 views (shown below, left). More favoritism towards the ship was seen when, on June 17th, Twitter[11] user @SrLuchoPortuano posted a Mother Ignoring Kid Drowning In A Pool meme showcasing the Miles and Peni ship at the top of the hierarchy, gaining over 790 retweets, 10,000 likes and 130,000 views.

Miles Morales refers to the trend of character Miles Morales being drawn as an anthropomorphic cat. The character has seen a growing trend of being paired with Peni, most notably a June 16th post by Twitter[12] user @MKE2ND that showed an animation of the two. The tweet gained over 16.7k retweets, 101k likes and 3.3 million views (shown below).
There was then an uptick of Meows and Peni being drawn together after the tweet was published. Twitter[13] user @AlexicoReborn made a webcomic of Peni being cheered up by Meows, published on June 19th. The tweet received over 2.6k retweets, 27k likes and 380k views (shown below, left). The trend also reached Instagram[14], where on June 20th, user @vlizsc posted an Excuse Me He Asked for No Pickles version of Peni and Meow, gaining 130 likes over the course of two days (shown below, right).
Fans continued making art of the pair, even anthropomorphized together. Twitter[15] user @MoisesDLCArt posted a fanart of Meows and Peni also in an anthropomorphic form on June 20th, gaining 45 retweets, 470 likes, and 10.9k views (shown below, left). A few days later, Twitter[16] user @DELQ_Drawings published a tweet on June 22nd of Peni hugging Meows, gaining over 350 retweets, 3.8k likes and 39k views (shown below, right).
