About

Mr. Dink, or Bud Dink, is a recurring character on the American animated series Doug. Mr. Dink is a heavy set, purple skinned and middle-aged friend of the series' protagonist Doug Funnie. Online, Mr. Dink has been portrayed as a sexual predator, who attempts to seduce Doug or other characters from the series.

Origin

Mr. Dink first appeared in the premiere episode of Doug, "Doug Bags a Neematoad," which aired August 11th, 1991 on Nickelodeon. [1][2] While not confirmed on the series, Mr. Dink's last name may be a reference to the slang acronym "Double Income No Kids." [3] Given the character's penchant for expensive gadgets and lack of children, the reference may be a joke on the slang term.

The earliest iteration of a Mr. Dink meme was posted by YouTuber [4] 50happens on June 9th, 2007. The video entitled "Mr. Dink Loves His Wife," is a text-to-speech voice telling a sexually explicit story about Mr. Dink and, as of February 2018, has received more than 13,000 views.

Spread

In 2014, YouTuber [5] EmptyHero uploaded a video titled "A Very Special Episode of Doug." While the original video has been removed, a now deleted account on the /r/DeepIntoYouTube subreddit [6][7] posted the video on September 22nd, 2014. It was shared again by Redditor[8] Accipe_Hoc on October 19th. Three years later, on September 8th, 2017 EmptyHero reuploaded[9] the video in a collection of similar videos he had created that were also removed (shown below, left).

The following year, on December 13th, 2015, YouTuber Vinesauce Vinny [10] and GeePM [11] teamed up with Games Repainted [12] to stream a retextured Super Mario Galaxy [13] for a charity on Twitch. During the stream Vinesauce Vinny and GeePM get into a discussion about 90's Nickelodeon, mainly Doug, where Mr. Dink gets mentioned and they both discuss about how weird they think Mr. Dink is in the show. On December 14, 2015 the stream was uploaded to YouTube [14] by Vinesauce: The Full Sauce garnering nearly 600,000 views (shown below, right).
