Mulch Gang For Life or #MulchGangForLife, also known as Mulchposting, refers to a series of Instagram and TikTok memes, including videos and image macros, using the hashtag "#MulchGangForLife" in which edited images of puppies are shown over babyish AI voice narration about how much the puppies want to eat mulch and "mulchmax," often describing themselves as "soilpilled." The meme was started by Instagram user sme11a_ in May 2023 and gained viral spread over the following months as the user continued to post mulch gang memes, becoming popularized on TikTok around October 2023 and inspiring new variations on the meme by other users.

Origin

On May 2nd, 2023, Instagram^[1] user sme11a__ posted an image macro depicting a low-res image of a white dog under the caption, "mulch," writing in the description, "mulch is here #mulchgang," garnering over 8,100 likes in six months (shown below). On June 1st, the Instagram^[2] user posted a Reel referencing the meme, garnering over 103,000 likes in five months.

Mulch is material used in gardening to help soil retain water and generally help keep it healthy.^[9]

On June 7th, Instagram^[3][4] user qooslag also started posting mulch gang memes, consisting mostly of image macros featuring funny looking dogs and references to eating mulch. On June 20th, sme11a__ posted a video to Instagram^[5] featuring several dogs over a TikTok^[6] audio of a man yelling "mulch is here," tagging it "#mulchgang," garnering over 147,000 likes in five months, using the audio at least one more time on Instagram^[7] that month (shown below, left). On August 16th, sme11a__ posted a Reel featuring an AI voiceover that finishes the video with the line "mulch gang for life," garnering over 7,400 likes in three months (shown below, right).

On September 7th, the Instagram^[8] user posted a video using a babyish AI voiceover along with a slideshow of puppies, explaining how much they love mulch and again ending the video "mulch gang for life," garnering over 171,000 likes in two months (shown below).

Instagram users sme11a__ and qooslag continued to post memes about mulch gang in over the following weeks, which started to get reposted to TikTok. For example, on September 22nd, 2023, TikToker^[10] @worstkino reposted a video originally posted to Instagram^[11] by smella__ on September 19th, garnering over 78,000 views in two months. On October 20th, TikToker^[12] @wilting.wisterias posted a new version of the meme using the "I love mulch" audio, garnering over 335,000 views in three weeks (shown below).

On October 24th, TikToker^[13] @percm30w posted a video following the trend using terms like "soilpilled" and "mulchposting," garnering over 320,000 views in two weeks (shown below, left). On November 5th, TikToker^[14] @talkinghappysnail posted a version of the meme where the puppy begs for mulch, garnering over 325,000 views in two days (shown below, right).
