My Favorite Meat is Hot Dog is a quote said by former presidential candidate and current senatorial candidate Mitt Romney in a talk with supporters. Once the quote was discovered on Twitter, jokes about Romney and his stiff persona spread.

Origin

On May 1st, 2018, The Washington Examiner^[1] published a profile about Romney's candidacy for a Utah senatorial seat. In the piece, the article quotes Romney talking to supporters about his tastes:

“My favorite meat is hot dog, by the way. That is my favorite meat,” he told a gathering of supporters as they joined him recently for a casual dinner organized by his campaign. “My second favorite meat is hamburger. And, everyone says, oh, don’t you prefer steak? It’s like, I know steaks are great, but I like hot dog best, and I like hamburger next best.”

Spread

The quote began spreading around Twitter following a tweet by @mviser^[2] on May 4th which featured the relevant quote. The tweet gained over 1,200 retweets and 4,000 likes in the span of several hours (shown below).

After that tweet, many Twitter users began joking about the quote. For example, Twitter user @AdamJohnsonNYC posted a joke that gained 86 retweets and 472 likes (shown below, left). User @gilbertjasono posted a joke imagining Romney ordering a hot dog, gaining over 360 retweets and 2,500 likes (shown below, right)

The moment gained media coverage from outlets including The Cut,^[3] The Hill,^[4] and Grub Street.^[5]
