The line originates from Beyblade: Metal Fusion (also known as Metal Fight Beyblade),
Season 1, Episode 12 (“Infiltrate the Dark Nebula’s Castle!” / French title: “Les défis de Doji”), which originally aired in Japan on June 21, 2009.
In the scene, the antagonist Doji (Daidoji) confronts the protagonist Gingka Hagane. After offering him “one last chance,” Doji says (in the English dub):
“I was trying to give you one last chance, Gingka, but if you insist then I have no choice.
It must be Wednesday because it’s time to take out the trash.”
The French dub adapted the line into the now-iconic phrase: “Nous sommes mercredi, ça tombe bien c’est le jour où on sort les poubelles.” The voice actor in the French version was Romain Barbieux.
The meme itself began circulating in early 2022 through the YouTube channel “Nous sommes mercredi” and later the Twitter/X account @MercrediPoubel
(created January 2023). The account posts the same short clip every Wednesday.
The clip remained a niche weekly gag among French anime and meme communities for several years.
It gained significantly more visibility starting around June 10, 2026, when one of the weekly uploads began circulating more widely. The dedicated X account @MercrediPoubel
regularly posts the clip every Wednesday, often in reply to users asking “On est quel jour ?”.
The posts frequently receive hundreds to over a thousand likes.YouTube Poops and remixes of the clip have also appeared on YouTube, often exaggerating Doji’s delivery or pairing the audio with unrelated footage for comedic effect.
