Domain Expansion is a catchphrase used in a series of memes referencing the Jujutsu Kaisen special ability, "domain expansion," which is the most powerful technique of any jujutsu user in the anime series. Since mid-July 2023, the phrase has been referenced in memes, resignifying famous manga panels by other artists — most notably a My Hero Academia panel from the climax battle between Ochaco Uraraka and Himiko Toga.

Origin

On July 14th, 2023, Twitter^[1] user @RukasuMHA posted an edited panel of chapter 394 of the manga series My Hero Academia replacing the original phrase said by Ochaco Uraraka, "The cutest girl in the whole world" (shown below, left), for Jujutsu Kaisen's special ability, "domain expansion." The tweet is paired with a caption commenting about My Hero Academia fans who were unsatisfied with the Ochaco Uraraka vs. Himiko Toga fight and were expecting a more aggressive conclusion. The post (shown below, right) garnered over 44,200 likes and 4,200 retweets in four days.

In the following days, @RukasuMHA's tweet quickly went viral within the manga community on Twitter, inspiring other memes in which the catchphrase and reference were edited into various manga panels. For example, on July 15th, 2023, Twitter^[2] user @joeybotttt posted an edited panel of the Haikyuu!! manga with the "domain expansion" caption (shown below). The post garnered over 15,800 likes and 3,600 retweets in three days.

On July 16th, Twitter^[3] user @The25thNigga posted a Dragon Ball version of the meme (shown below, left), which received over 1,100 likes and 88 retweets in a day. On July 15th, Twitter^[4] user uploaded a Chainsaw-Man recaptioned panel (shown below, right), which garnered over 200 likes and 21 retweets in three days.
