The meme was first uploaded to Reddit in February 2021 with the phrase becoming popular in other image macros and video edits over the course of the year.
Origin
On February 11th, 2021, a now-deleted Redditor posted an image macro of an angry skull painted like the American flag with top and bottom text reading, "Oh yeah 'land of the free'? So why can't I rinse my balls in the Burger King soda dispenser" to /r/okbuddyretard[1] with the title "Libtards 🤬🤬🤬," gaining over 17,200 upvotes in six months (shown below).
Spread
The meme spread across social media over the course of the following months. It was posted to Instagram[2] by @jawsome_bro on February 11th, 2021, gaining over 7,300 likes in six months. On March 20th, Gianni Matragrano posted a voiced-over version of the meme to Instagram[3] and YouTube,[4] gaining over 116,000 views on the former and 1.1 million on the latter in five months (shown below).
On May 20th, Twitter[7] user @SuperTankerr posted "Oh yeah, 'Land of the Free'?" along with an image of a Revenant from Doom pointing at its balls and the soda machine, gaining over 1,200 likes and 140 retweets in three months (shown below).
On June 5th, Redditor u/LeDogeH4sArrived posted a similar image macro to /r/dogelore[6] using an image of Doge over the American flag, and asking the same question about the McDonald's dishwasher, gaining over 800 upvotes in two months (shown below).
On June 25th, Instagram[5] user @epicjoko posted the original image macro, gaining over 74,000 likes in two months. The phrase has been used and referenced a number of times in shitposts and image macros, often accompanied by imagery using the American flag in some way (examples shown below).
