About
Anthony Edwards, also known by his nickname Ant-Man, is a professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA. Since his debut in 2020, Anthony Edwards has been a source of numerous memes within the basketball community online due to his high player stats, on-court personality and resemblance to Michael Jordan.
Career
Anthony Edwards debuted as a player in 2020 and won the "Rookie of the Year" award for being the best of the new players who joined the league that year, while also becoming the third youngest player to score over 40 points in a game. This led to his immediate rise into stardom, as the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise did not have a star player, giving the spotlight entirely to Edwards.
On March 22nd, 2021, the Facebook page NBA Memes[1] uploaded one of the first memes to involve Anthony Edwards, notably using the Anthony Adams Rubbing Hands format, with a mock-up of what is believed to be his reaction after fellow rookie LaMelo got injured (shown below). The post received over 6,400 likes and 300 shares in three years.
Online History
Following his rookie season, Anthony Edwards started garnering more prominent online attention, with more memes and references about him and his ability to carry the Timberwolves into the playoffs. Whenever Edwards would have a dominant performance in a game, new memes would often be made comparing him to other NBA players, most often Michael Jordan.
For example, on July 17th, 2022, a Redditor in the /r/NBAcirclejerk subreddit named u/anonymousloverboy[2] uploaded a meme saying that Anthony Edwards would look like Michael Jordan if he went bald, earning over 600 upvotes in two years (shown below).
Send Da Video
In his third season, Anthony Edwards spawned a larger meme with Send Da Video, a play on a phrase that he reportedly said in DMs to a girl to make sure she took abortion pills. The phrase quickly took off with people using it both to create memes for or against Edwards.
On December 18th, 2023, the Instagram page nbasburner[3] uploaded a meme in which the rest of the Timberwolves team is seen asking Edwards to "lock in," but he's busy on the phone saying to send da video (shown below). In six months, the meme received over 16,600 likes.
