About
Sports Quote Cards refers to social media graphics featuring quotes from figures in sports, usually NBA players and analysts, that are recontextualized as reaction images. Popular examples include "I wasn't really familiar with your game," "I got one more in me" and "What happened to the game I love?"
Origin
On sports-focused social media accounts, it became common practice in the late 2010s and early 2020s to create graphics featuring a quote said by an athlete or analyst overlaid on top of an image of said speaker.
One of the first of these to become a meme was Vince Carter's "I got one more in me," said in 2019 by the player about returning for one more season. The image was posted by Bleacher Report[2] on June 5th, 2019 and began seeing use, usually in ironic contexts, to mock someone failing in repeated ways.
Spread
On January 14th, 2021, the Instagram[1] news account @TheScore posted a graphic featuring Shaquille O'Neal's quote, "I owe you an apology. I wasn't really familiar with your game," said to player Christian Wood, with a response from Wood (shown below).
Starting in the summer of 2022, the quote began seeing use as a meme as social media users began posting O'Neal's quote in response to people who pleasantly surprised them.
Through 2022 and 2023, NBA quote cards continued to see usage on social media. Other popular examples include Michael Jordan's "I used to pray for times like this" graphic, used when a long-awaited event is happening (example shown below, left) and the fake Adam Silver quote, "Get ready to learn Chinese, buddy"," used when an NBA player performs poorly, suggesting they'll begin playing basketball in China (example shown below, right).
Other examples include Mark Jackson's "What happened to the game I love?" and Kylian Mbappe's "I will be there no matter what," though that comes from Association Football rather than basketball.
