Apetor

Overview

Apetor, real name Tor Eckhoff, was a Norwegian YouTuber with an emphasis on outdoors and adventure vlogging. Known primarily for car reviews, drinking, mountain climbing, ice baths and lake skating, he was also one of the oldest YouTubers to have a consistent following. Eckhoff passed away in late November 2021 while filming a lake ice skating video in which he fell under the water and drowned.

Online History

Apetor's first video was posted to YouTube^[1] on October 10th, 2006, simply titled "In My Boat," the description of the 20-second video states that he filmed it using a compact camera, and after 15 years, the video amassed over 330,000 views (shown below).

After years of posting videos, the first video to hit over 1 million views on his channel was posted on September 6th, 2010. Titled "Soon Winter,"^[2] it features footage of Apetor doing various activities while outside, such as driving his car, pushing snow, ice diving, eating lunch and ice skating. The video received over 1.2 million views in 11 years (shown below).

Apetor's YouTube channel reached 200,000 subscribers on August 15th, 2018, 1 million on December 13th, 2020, and was over 1.2 million as of November 30th, 2021.^[5]

Death

While not having a strict upload cycle, Apetor would consistently upload a video about the first snow of the year, a Christmas video and a birthday video in which he proclaims that he is not dead yet, followed by his age. On November 22nd, 2021, he posted another one of his birthday videos, titled "I am not dead, I am 57 today,"^[3] in which he did his usual ritual of immersing himself in a bathtub outside, drinking vodka, putting a bag over his head, cutting trees with a chainsaw and generally playing around outside (shown below).

This video was Apetor's last, as he died five days later on November 27th, 2021. On Friday, November 26th, Apetor went out to a lake near Kongsberg, where he fell through the ice while filming another video. Rescuers were reportedly able to helicopter lift him to a nearby medical hospital, but Apetor was unable to recover from the drowning and was pronounced dead the following day.^[4]
