About

Chappell Roan is an American singer-songwriter known for her following online and several viral moments and audios involving her work. She has been producing music since the late 2010s, but garnered more widespread attention in the spring and summer of 2024 on the back of songs like "Good Luck Babe" and "Hot To Go."

Career

Roan was born in 1998, under a different name, and started performing music while still in high school, posting videos to YouTube. Her first full-length album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess was released in 2023.[1] She has claimed in the past that Chappell Roan is her "drag persona," a character that allows her to say and do things she otherwise wouldn't.[2]

Roan's song "Good Luck Babe," released on April 5th, 2024, became a hit on TikTok in mid-2024. Uploaded to her YouTube channel that same day, the song received over 5.7 million views in two months (seen below).

Online History

Roan first came to online prominence with an October 4th, 2022, video in which she told a story about her fandom of "Whip My Hair Back And Forth" over a beat (seen below) that earned over 652,000 likes and 5.4 million views in the course of nearly two years.[3]

Numerous commenters visiting the video in 2024 expressed their surprise to learn that Roan had previously gone viral for it before she became well-known as a pop artist years later (examples seen below).

Your Favorite Artist's Favorite Artist

In the spring of 2024, Roan became known for an April 15th introductory ad-lib during a performance at Coachella in which she said:

My name is Chappell Roan. I'm your favorite artist's favorite artist. I am your dream girl's dream girl. And I'm gonna serve exactly what you are: c--t!

Roan later said that the ad-lib was an homage to drag queen Sasha Colby,[2] notably referencing the slang expression "serving c--t." The sound turned into a TikTok audio shortly after, with users lip-synching over it in situations where they needed to "hype themselves up."

For example, TikToker @melodicwhimsy posted a TikTok (seen below, left) of themselves using the audio to prepare for a day at work on April 21st, 2024, earning over 299,000 likes and 1.7 million views in the course of two months.[4] On April 24th, TikToker @yolittlepeeps posted a similar video depicting their self-motivating practice during a day of teaching, earning over 400,000 likes and 2.1 million views in two months (seen below, right).[5]
