Serving Cunt

About

Serving Cunt, also known as "To Serve Cunt," is a catchphrase and slang term akin to Girlboss, Stan Twitter and LGBTQ+ signifiers that means to be powerful in an unapologetic and feminine manner. It's similar to the phrase It's Giving and has been used in trends such as The Director Said 'Cut' But X Heard 'Cunt' and "She Lived, She Served Cunt, Then She Died." It was originally used by drag queens within drag race circles, most notably used by contestants on RuPaul's Drag Race and in RuPaul's song "Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve & Talent," also known as the abbreviation "C.U.N.T." The phrase became prominent in memes in early 2021 on Twitter, Tumblr and TikTok, among other social media sites.

Origin

The idea of "Serving Cunt" started within drag communities in real life but surfaced on sites like Twitter^[1] in the early 2010s. On August 17th, 2011, YouTuber^[2] tensacross uploaded a video titled, "Black Queen Serving Cunt," that was taken at a drag show. In March 2014, a contestant on season six of RuPaul's Drag Race, Gia Gunn, was quoted saying, "Feeling Like Pussy, Feeling Like Cunt," further popularizing the term in mainstream media (shown below, left). On March 24th, 2017, RuPaul released her album American that included the track "Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve & Talent," which translated to the abbreviation "C.U.N.T." On April 12th, 2017, the song was posted to YouTube by the channel rupaultv, gaining roughly 943,000 views in five years (shown below, right).

On April 20th, 2017, influencer Jeffree Star wrote, "Serving you Foreign Executive Cunt realness," in an Instagram^[3] post's caption, receiving roughly 209,100 likes in five years. On October 4th, 2020, Tana Mongeau used the catchphrase on Twitter,^[4] gaining roughly 9,000 likes in two years.

On May 4th, 2021, Tumblr^[5] user robloxmilf posted a photo of the Fairy Godmother from Shrek with the caption, "she lived she served cunt then she died," gaining roughly 52,000 notes in one year (shown below, left). The catchphrase spread to Twitter^[6] soon after as a snowclone, gaining traction going into the end of the year. For instance, on May 16th, 2021, Twitter^[7] user benyahr used the catchphrase for image macros of the character Debbie Jellinsky from Addams Family Values, gaining roughly 1,300 likes in one year (shown below, right).

"Serving Cunt" became a common memetic phrase thereafter, reiterated on Twitter, Instagram and elsewhere. For instance, on November 21st, 2021, Twitter^[8] user girljoys_ tweeted an image of Arlene from Garfield with the caption, "she was serving cunt when it was illegal to do so," gaining roughly 29,000 likes in ten months (shown below, left). Sometime in mid-2021, a currently unknown meme creator made a fake Wikipedia screenshot that had "Serving Cunt" as a subsection (shown below, right). It was referenced on Twitter^[9] as early as August 2021 and later went viral on Twitter^[10] in October 2021 and Tumblr^[11] in November 2021.
