About
Colleen Hoover is an American author known for her young adult and romance novels. She is best known for her 2016 bestseller It Ends With Us, a romance novel that concerns issues of domestic violence. The author has received criticism for her romantic descriptions of abusive and similarly problematic relationships, however, Hoover also enjoys a zealous fanbase on BookTok and online young adult literature communities. In November 2022, some internet users began blaming Colleen Hoover for getting Z-Library (a free ebook site) taken down and its owners arrested.
Origin
Colleen Hoover's self-published debut novel Slammed was released in January 2012, before reaching No. 8 on The New York Times best sellers list in August 2012. Hoover went on to release several sequels to the book, as well as publishing other series. Hoover published her novel It Ends with Us in 2016, a book about a domestic abuse victim who enters a violent relationship as an adult.[1]
In 2021, Hoover grew prominent on TikTok's #BookTok community, and It Ends with Us reached No. 1 on The New York Times best sellers list in January 2022. On June 27th, 2021, TikToker[2] @annabelleglines1 posted a haul of Colleen Hoover books, gathering over 300,000 plays and 80,000 likes in over two years (seen below, left). On November 17th, 2021, TikToker[3] @bookishmelody posted a ranking of Colleen Hoover's books that gathered over 2.5 million plays and 180,000 likes in over two years (seen below, right). According to The New York Times, Hoover's books sold better than the Bible in 2022.[8]

On May 8th, 2022, Twitter[4] user @reggiebIack posted a Tati 'Breaking My Silence' meme with a caption that read, "I feel no desire whatsoever to read any colleen hoover book." The post gathered over 9,000 likes in nearly 10 months (seen below).
In June 2022, several tweets criticizing Colleen Hoover's work and her popularity on TikTok gathered several thousand likes on Twitter. On June 19th, Twitter[5] user @jcnuarysgus posted a tweet about Hoover's repeated use of tropes that perceivably glorify abuse, gathering over 7,000 likes in over eight months (seen below, left). On June 26th, Twitter[6] user @samaelibrary posted a tweet about men written by Colleen Hoover being bad, gathering over 4,000 likes in eight months (seen below, right). On June 28th, Twitter[7] user @ycsm1n posted a tweet calling Hoover's books "dogsh*t," gathering over 4,000 likes as well.
On July 4th, 2021, an excerpt from Hoover's book Ugly Love was posted to Twitter[9] by user @scullesbian, gathering over 8,000 likes in over seven months. The tweet was then quote tweeted by @joelrochesterr,[10] gathering over 33,000 likes in a similar timeframe (seen below). The excerpt contains a dialogue between the characters Tate and Rachel, who happen to be step-siblings, commenting on the size of their newborn baby's testicles.
On August 9th, 2022, Twitter[11] user @Abookishdiaries posted a compilation of bizarre quotes from Hoover's books, gathering over 14,000 likes in over six months (seen below).

In November 2022, Twitter users began discussing the likelihood that a viral TikTok about finding free Colleen Hoover books on an ebook piracy website named Z-Library was the cause of the site being taken down. Twitter[12] user @wengelll posted a meme regarding the issue on November 4th, 2022, gathering over 90,000 likes in over four months (seen below).
