About

Eddsworld is an independent British production company founded in 2004 by the late Edward "Edd" Gould on Newgrounds. It is also the name of an animated comedy produced by that company using Adobe Flash software which is released on sites such as YouTube and Newgrounds. In addition, a comic strip was distributed on Eddsworld's website, however due to complications with the site, the comic is now being released on Eddsworld's deviantART and Tumblr. The series mainly focuses on three main protagonists named Edd, Tom and Matt, however, there was another character named Tord who left the series in 2008, as he wanted to pursue his own non-Eddsworld career.

Origin

The Eddsworld series was first started on Newgrounds on April 28, 2004 with an animation call "Edd Again" which only involved Edd and Matt going by their daily life. Edd met Tom (aka TomSka) and Tord online, whereas he met Matt originally at a school field day event, thus forming the Eddsworld crew until 2008, when Tord left.

It has been speculated that Tom and Tord disliked each other. In Tom's video Ritalin'D, a on his TomSka channel, Tom wears a shirt stating that he "never liked Tord anyway." However, Tord left as he didn't want to be associated with the Eddsworld name and because of crazy fans which won't leave him alone to the extent that he can't even use his real name, according to a video on Tom's second channel DarkSquidge .

On March 18, 2006, Edd finally began his YouTube career, where he got most of his fame from. His first upload was called "Tord's Adventure".

Notable Animations

Popularity and Spread

Edd's animations quickly became moderate successes (most now having just over a million views), with Edd's work being featured on the sites he posted them on such as deviantART, Albino Blacksheep, Newgrounds and YouTube. Some of his comics were occasionally drawn by guest artists, but since his death, have been drawn by Paul ter Voorde, who is now the main animator of Eddsworld.

Edd's Cancer Diagnosis

On April 16, 2011, Edd uploaded a video to his channel entitled "Edd vs. Cancer," in which he, Matt and Tom discussed Edd's cancer diagnosis. It would be the second time Edd battled with cancer. As of September 2012, the video has received over 1,600,000 views and 22,500 comments.

After the diagnosis, many comments were uploaded to Edd's videos wishing him well in his fight. On April 18, 2011, animator Zach Hadel (known as PsychicPebbles) also uploaded a video to YouTube entitled "Edd vs. Cancer," this animation wished him well in the fight as well. Many other famous animators also did the same.

Edd's Death and Eddsworld: Legacy

(Note: Embedding of the YouTube video was disabled by request. Instead, here is a link to the video.)

On the morning of March 25, 2012, Edd passed away after a six-year-long battle with cancer. Immediately, the video announcing Edd's death was flooded with despairing comments, and comments mourning Edd's death began being spammed on videos related to Edd, even videos which just mention him for a second. However, Tom announced via a Vokle livestream that Edd had wished for his show to be continued, and the "Eddsworld: Legacy" project was launched to fund the series.

A page on the fundraiser site Indiegogo was created to fund the project, and the campaign raised $83,211 before time ran out on the fundraiser. $8000 from this money got shaved off, according to Tom on Twitter. Tom also confirmed via Twitter that an Eddsworld DVD is now in production thanks to Cyanide and Happiness author Rob DenBlyker's donations, and the first part in a two-part series, titled Space Face, which was partly animated by Edd before his death and finished by new Eddsworld animator Paul Ter Voorde, was uploaded to YouTube on June 2, 2012. Paul ter Voorde has released another animation called Skeff was released on August 22, 2012. This animation is narrated by Edd.
