NewJeans (뉴진스), is a five-member girl group and K-pop band formed in 2022. The group is composed of five members: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein, receiving massive popularity in a short period of time thanks to TikTok trends like 'OMG' CapCut Edits and other viral content using the group's music.

History

Career

NewJeans was formed in 2022 by South Korean independent label ADOR^[1], which first teased its new girl group on June 30th, 2022. The name of the group was revealed simultaneously with the release of their debut single, "Attention," via Instagram^[2] (shown below). The post garnered over 10,000 likes in a year.

The debut single "Attention" official YouTube^[3] video(shown below, left) was uploaded on July 21st, 2022, garnering over 52 million views and 1.5 million likes in a year. The video was followed by an announcement of their upcoming eponymous debut extended play (EP), which would contain four tracks.

A few days later, on July 23rd, the group posted the second single "Hype Boy" on YouTube. The release was accompanied by a clip revealing the names of the members and four other music videos (shown below) for the song, specific to the members' perspectives.

On August 1st, 2022, NewJeans' self-titled EP was released consisting of the singles "Attention, "Hype Boy," "Cookie" and "Hurt." Pre-orders for the EP surpassed 444,000 copies in three days.^[4]

The group released "Ditto"^[5] on December 19th, 2022, as the first single from their first single album, "OMG." The performance video of the music (shown below, left) amassed roughly 85,000 views and 952,000 likes in nine months. On January 3rd, 2023, the "OMG"^[6] single was released on YouTube (shown below, right), which received over 145 million views and 1.5 million likes in eight months.

The latest single from NewJeans "Super Shy"^[7] was released on July 7th, 2023, as part of their second EP, Get Up, which debuted on July 21, 2023. The music video (shown below) garnered over 46 million views and 1.5 million likes in one month.

NewJeans' 'OMG' CapCut Edits

NewJeans' 'OMG' CapCut Edits became a popular TikTok trend on January 2023. The trend consisted of posting videos of celebrities or characters using the "OMG" CapCut template. For instance, on January 15th, 2023, TikToker^[8] @bondolive posted a version of the trend using Drake's AI voice to sing "OMG" while also showing a series of stylized pictures of the rapper. The post (shown below) garnered over 2.5 million plays and 456,000 likes in eight months.

Reputation

The group has been considered a "new energy into the K-pop scene"^[9] by harnessing elements of ’90s R&B and pop with modern production. NewJeans has five songs featured in the Billboard Hot 100 list as of August 2023.^[10]

Fandom

Bunnies

NewJeans' fanbase^[11] is known as Bunnies (버니즈), or alternately as Tokki (토끼). The name is based on the group's overall rabbit aesthetic on promotional materials, as seen on the album covers for "NewJeans" and "OMG" EPs. On Deviantart^[12], search results for "newjeans" gives over 9,000 results.
