K-Pop Fans: "Which One's Cuter" refers to a series of memes parodying K-pop bands and their fans, with the joke implying that the appearance of K-pop band members can be perceived to be very similar. Originating from a viral tweet, the joke has spawned a series of memes in which K-Pop bands are compared to sets of virtually indistinguishable characters.

Origin

On November 22nd, 2018, Twitter user @trubuiar tweeted images of SpongeBob SquarePants characters Boys Who Cry, captioning it "K Pop stans b like "which one the cutest 😍😍."^[1] The post received over 49,500 retweets and 169,800 likes in nine months.

In the following days, the tweet was reposted multiple times on Reddit.^[2][3] Additionally, on November 24th, 2018, iFunny user fighter1 made a virtually identical post which gained over 74,900 smiles in nine months.^[4]

Spread

Until May 2019, the joke saw limited usage in memes on Twitter and Reddit. For example, March 7th, 2019, tweet by user @_ramoncin received over 1,800 retweets and 10,600 likes in five months.^[5] On March 21st, 2019, iFunny user Shogun made a repost which gained over 55,600 smiles in the same period.^[6][7]

On May 21st, 2019, Redditor mingren0315 made a "Plants vs. Zombies" meme based on the joke, with the post receiving over 21,800 upvotes in three months.^[8]

In the following months, the format received a significant spread on Reddit, with notable examples appearing in /r/memes, /r/dankmemes and other subreddits.
