Team 10

About

Team 10 is the name of a talent incubator consisting of YouTubers, vloggers and social media personalities led and founded by Jake Paul. As Team 10, the group, which originally consisted of Neels Visser, Alissa Violet, Alex Lange, AJ Mitchell, and twins Lucas and Marcus Dobre, live under one roof and create content for each other's various social media channels.

History

In 2015, Jake Paul, the YouTuber and founder of TeamDom, a new media company aimed at creating brand-sponsored content for the teen market, began raising money for "Team 10," a social media collective designed to create more content across multiple channels.^[1]

The following year, on August 5h, 2016, the Team 10 YouTube channel published a video called "Team 10." The post (shown below) received more than 514,000 views in about two years.

People reported that Paul, along with six others, would be moving into a new house together, named Team 10 House. The group originally consisted of Neels Visser, Alissa Violet, Alex Lange, AJ Mitchell, and twins Lucas and Marcus Dobre.^[2]

On January 17th, 2017, TechCrunch^[3] reported that Jake Paul had raised $1 million for the Team 10 project. At the time, Paul said of his success:

"It started as Team Ten a year and a half ago while vine was still big. I had this theory where I could replicate what Dr. Dre did in the music industry in the social media business. And I set out to put it to the test… found these kids online… they had 30,000 followers, then I flew them out to LA and taught them how to do things on social media.. In 2 weeks grew from 30,000 to 400,000 and today they have 16 million."

"It's Everyday Bro"

On May 30th, 2017, Paul uploaded a music video for a song called "It's Everyday Bro" to YouTube, where it gained over 26 million views (shown below). In the video, he brags about his followers and stated that he would soon pass Pewdiepie. Furthermore he made reference to his ex-girlfriend Alissa Violet, another YouTube star, who had undergone a very public breakup a few months prior amid rumors of mutual cheating and that Violet had begun to date Jake's brother, Logan Paul.^[4]

The video soon generated drama between all the involved parties. Following the release of the video, Logan responded by essentially laughing it off in a video (shown below, top left). Then Jake uploaded a diss track directed to his brother (shown below, top right). This continued to escalate as fans of both started to feud with each other, leading Jake to release an apology video (shown below, bottom left). Logan then responded with another, jokey diss track, but couched within it a vlog in which he said he would give Jake a second chance (shown below, bottom right). Two threads about the entire drama were posted to /r/OutOfTheLoop.^[5][6]

Meanwhile, Pewdiepie responded to Jake Paul's diss in "It's Everyday Bro" by mocking the video point by point in a video of his own that gathered over 6 million views (shown below).

2018 Team Exits

On May 4th, 2018, Nick Crompton, who was the center of the England Is My City meme, announced that he would be leaving the group. That day, he tweeted ^[11] a statement about leaving the group. He said, "In the past, I have been very disappointed in the way some talent have chosen to depart ways with Team 10, which is why I want to make it very clear as to why I am leaving,” Crompton said. “Due to internal changes being made within our various businesses that I don’t agree with, I have resigned both as chief operations officer and as talent … the vision for the business, people involved, and direction it’s now going in no longer makes sense to me." The post (shown below, left) received more than 1,500 retweets and 17,000 likes in less than one week.

Three days later, on May 7th, Team 10 member Chance Sutton announced his exit in a similar statement.^[12] The post (shown below, right) received more than 430 retweets and 5,200 likes in two days.

That, YouTuber Keemstar reported about a controversy within Team 10. According to the video, Jake Paul and brother Logan were, reportedly, looking to merge their social media companies, leaving their father Greg Paul in charge. The deisicion was not well-received among the staff. Keemstar reported, "Jake Paul’s father, known as Greg Paul, has completely taken over Jake Paul and Logan Paul’s businesses. And he’s planning to do a merger with the two … Nick Crompton absolutely hates Greg Paul. Apparently Greg Paul doesn’t know how to act. He’s calling people ‘whores’ and ‘cunts’ and derogatory terms at work." The video (shown below) received more than 1.5 million views in two days.

Terrorizing Neighborhood News Report

Oh July 17th, KTLA 5^[7] news reported that Paul has been performing stunts in his west-Hollywood neighborhood, causing property damaging and drawing a crowd. His neighbors began investigating a class-action lawsuit against Paul and the property owner.

“We used to be a nice, quiet street, and now we’re just this war zone,” said Paul’s neighbor Maytal Dahan. “We’re families here and we’re more than happy to have them live here if they’re respectful of their neighbors, but they’re not.”

The following day, Paul tweeted^[8] the video with the caption "I'm dead 😂 @ neighbors you won't do it." The post (shown below) received more than 17,000 retweets and 82,000 likes.

#JakePaulIsOverParty

On August 1st, 2017, Jake Paul posted a video entitled "SELF DRIVING TESLA IN DRIVE THRU PRANK (FREAKOUTS)." In the video (shown below), Paul meets a fan with an accent. When the fan tells Paul that he is from Kazakhstan, Paul responds, "It sounds like you’re just gonna blow someone up […] Send the nuke." The video has been viewed more than 5.5 million times in three days.

Shortly after the video hit the web, fans on Twitter began deriding Paul, calling the video racist. They started expressing their opinion on Twitter under the hashtag #JakePaulIsOverParty. Twitter user @itsRyanButler tweeted the video and wrote, "This is racism to the most extent, and the worst part is that his fans will still support him. #jakepaulisoverparty" The tweet (shown below) received more than 2,800 retweets and 6,400 likes in less than three days.

Car Horn Lawsuit

On October 10th, 2017, TMZ^[9] reported that a California man featured in one Jake Paul's prank videos, in which the YouTuber honked an extra loud car horn to scare pedestrians, was suing Paul for hearing damage and emotional distress.

In the video (shown below), Paul and his crew rig an extra large car horn to an SUV. They then proceed to drive around Los Angeles and blare the horn at unsuspecting pedestrians. The plaintiff is said to be in the video leaving a store in Los Angeles--however, the suit has not confirmed which person he is. He now claims that the horn caused hearing loss and is suing Paul and Paul's company for damages.^[10]

Posted on July 7th, 2017, the video has been viewed more than 7.3 million times in four months.

Transphobia Controversy

On June 29th, 2019, Lilah Gibney and her friend Kendall Raindrop posted a video titled, "kicked out of team 10 for being transgender (video proof)" (shown below). The video gained over 55,200 views in four days. The video shows footage of editor named Blaine O’Roark asking them to leave the Team 10 house after they were invited because he thought "real women" were coming over.

That same day, KEEMSTAR^[15] shared the video to twitter captioning it, "Team 10 kicked out two Trans girls from the house for "NOT BEING REAL GIRLS" Yikes!" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 41,900 likes and 4,900 retweets. In the video, the team ten manager asked the women to take down their video. The next day, Twitter user @elijahdaniel^[16] tweeted a message accusing Team 10 of sending Gibney a "threatening lawsuit text message" and challenging the organization to a legal battle (shown below, right). The tweet garnered over 7,900 likes and 500 retweets in two days. The girls claim Jake Paul had nothing to do with it and insist they had been invited over.

On July 1st, @jakepau^[17] tweeted, "its funny that time after time of ppl trying 2 cancel me or the ppl around me that there is ANY weight to it… since day 1 all my "controversies" have been cleared & aired out publicly & they showed nothing but the fact that other parties were lying.. try again! ill be beachside" (shown below, left). The tweet garnered over 13,505 likes with the top comment simply reading "transphobe." On July 2nd, Lilah Gibney^[18] reposted the Team 10 official statement saying that they aren't transphobic and that they are investigating the situation. Gibney commented, "wait what is there to investigate??? video proof usually is enough babe! i wasn’t welcomed with “open arms” but told you LEAVE. so grossed out & hurt that transphobia is being normalized & not talked about like its a real thing that transgender people deal with DAILY. period" (shown below, right). The tweet garnered over 4,500 likes and 400 retweets in three days.

On July 3rd, Drama Alert uploaded a YouTube video reporting on the controversy (shown below). The video gained over 1.4 million views in two days and revealed that the girls were being threatened by the Team 10 manager over text.
